A fine thangka portraying Tsong Khapa, Tibet, 18th/early 19th century.

Delicately painted with several figures, buildings and landscape settings, Tsong Khapa seated on a lotus throne in the centre holding the vajra representing the compassion of all Buddhas, the masculine principle, in his right hand, and the bell representing wisdom, the female principle in his left hand, with an image of Yamantaka Vajrabhairava and consort above symbolizing wisdom conquering death, and below an image of Yama and consort riding on a waterbuffalo symbolizing wisdom conquering harmful spirits, on both sides of Tsong Khapa, his main disciples Gyaltsab Je and Khedrup Je.
Colour pigment on cotton cloth, brocade framing with gilt and richly decorated scroll-ends. Verso with a numbering: 'number one left part'. 93 x 61 cm (with framing c. 183 x 90 cm).

Wear, loss of pigment, minor defects.
